Scientific production published in Mexican nursing journals: A descriptive and bibliometric analysis of the 2016-2020 period

Abstract
Introduction: The bibliometric analyses on the production of nursing knowledge have shown an evolution of diverse specific topics and because of this, measurement metrics are required in order to facilitate the organization and categorization of this growing information which, in turn, can reveal areas of opportunity and improvement regarding the quality of the nursing research.
Objective: By means of a bibliometric analysis, to describe the topics and methodological characteristics of the nursing research published in Mexican journals.
Methodology: This is a retrospective and bibliometric ex post facto study. 354 original articles were analyzed through indicators of description and productivity, collaboration, and methodology and conceptual frame.
Results: The articles were written by 1194 authors and showed indexes of Zakutina and Priyenikova of 34.06, Lawani of 3.94, and Subramanyam of 0.987, and an internal authorship rate of 29%. 43.5% of the research studies were carried out in hospital settings mainly focused on the older adult and chronic conditions care. Regarding quantitative studies, the descriptive and transversal designs were prevalent. More than 90% of the articles did not report any source of financing. Regarding qualitative studies, phenomenological designs were prevalent, and the main data gathering tool was the audio recorded interview with open codification analysis.
Discussion and conclusions: An increment in the scientific production in the first level of attention was identified in contrast to previous studies; nevertheless, the clinical and hospital-related research topics were still prevalent. The use of bibliometric indicators represents an untold approach towards the analysis of the characteristics of nursing research publications in the Mexican journals.
