Abstract

Introduction: In Mexico, cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus are the first and third leading causes of mortality. The WHO recommends implementing and evaluating innovative programs aimed at providing tools to modify behaviors and avoid complications, as well as improving the understanding of people with diabetes about their health condition. The Meta Salud Diabetes (MSD) program employs a constructivist approach to provide secondary prevention of diabetes through education.

Objective: To describe the evaluation and training of healthcare personnel in the management of the Meta Salud Diabetes program.

Development: The MSD training was provided to 34 health professionals responsible for the Mutual Aid Groups (MAG), among whom 35.2 % were nursing professionals. The procedure entailed the presentation and replication of MSD activities, which were designed with a salutogenic theoretical framework. The didactic strategy incorporated tools and skills designed to facilitate the active involvement of the MAG. The training was evaluated through a reflective and qualitative process with a constructivist formative methodology.

Conclusions: The evaluation of the training process to implement the MSD revealed several challenges, including the lack of training for health personnel in preventive topics and the absence of tools to facilitate the implementation of participatory educational techniques. Describing the experience and evaluation of this participatory teaching-learning process can inform the improvement of programs such as the SDM and contribute to the discourse on the continuing education of health professionals.
