Abstract

Introduction: The high prevalence of systemic arterial hypertension is a health issue worldwide. It is necessary to deepen, from a critical perspective, on the underlying aspects related to the lack of control and the complexity of this phenomenon within the context of poverty.

Objective: To analyze from a critical perspective the experiences and meanings of 3 women suffering from systemic arterial hypertension living in a context of poverty and agricultural labor in Mexico City.

Methodology: This is an ethnographic study with a 2 year follow up on three women suffering from systemic arterial hypertension. Observations and in depth as well as informal interviews were carried out. The interviews were analyzed from the critical phenomenology perspective.

Results: The following categories were identified: beginning and ailments; and daily experience of the illness. The results showed the complex interactions reflecting the tensions derived from living in a context of poverty and somatic culture.

Discussion and conclusions: The findings show the synergy of the context-related factors which contribute to the somatic culture and lack of health attention in which the presence of ailments, illnesses, and gender inequality is normalized. The experience of the illness was highly influenced by the economic situation as well as by gender.
